McDonald’s restaurants in the Netherlands will make changes to the use of single-use cups for customers who consume their products inside the restaurants.
Following inspections by the Dutch Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT), the company is required to implement a solution using reusable cups for in-store consumption.
McDonald’s has committed to using exclusively reusable cups from 5 January 2027. A fine of up to €3.75 million may be imposed if the company fails to comply with the relevant order.
The change is part of the Netherlands’ efforts to reduce the use of single-use plastic products and promote reuse. McDonald’s has stated that it supports the objectives of legislation aimed at reducing single-use plastics, while also highlighting the particular operating conditions of quick-service restaurants.
